St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery in Arizona

Many times we heard about the miracle in the desert – the new monastery founded by six greek monks from the Mount Athos in 1995.
In December 2009 we managed to visit this place. The Monastery is in the Arizona state south from Phoenix about 130 kilometres (the whole distance from Vancouver is about 2800 km). Currently 65 monks live over there. During 15 years several churches were built. The territory is planned beautifully, and has palms, flowers, fountains, and so on. The development of new chapels, internal roads, service buildings continues. There are large fields with oranges, lemons, olives, and grapes. They bake bread and make other food they need.
The monastery invites people all year round each day from 10 to 14.30. There is also opportunity to live at the monastery for some time. In this case people need to attend all the services. It is allowed to make pictures everywhere. The only restriction – you cannot make pictures of the monks and other guests.
Most of the icons and furniture are from Greece. In the main cathedral there is a wonderworking icon of the Arizona Mother of God.
Among the monks there people from many countries. We met Fr Seraphim from Moscow in the Book store. More details see on the web site: www.stanthonysmonastery.org
