Culture and Education Committe report for 2002

Dear clergy, Council members and all parishioners of the Holy Resurrection Sobor!
Greetings to all of you!
May our Lord be glorified for the blessings all of us received in our Sunday school life and cultural activities in the last year. It is so wonderful to say that we are slowly but growing.
A new group of Preschool children was organized last year, in addition to two other groups in our Sunday School. We are grateful to Natalia Shulzhenko and Olga Lashkova who enthusiastically take care of the little ones.
The Elementary School children are being faithfully taught by Matushka Mary Slipko, Irene Nevolsky and her daughter Natalia Chodireva.
Without the help of Irene Gruntseva who is always eager to substitute me in teaching the High School children, the work would have been more difficult.
The contribution made by all these ladies is immeasurable and we thank you all once again. May God bless you!
We continue to be thankful to Irene Naverniouk who helped with the children’s concerts. The performance which took place on June 2, 2002 was dedicated “To Mothers and Fathers”. Everyone enjoyed songs, Bible skit, two plays in Russian, gymnastics and poems.
Our annual Christmas Presentation was an overwhelming success. Children prepared a play, called “A Curious Angel” with the Nativity scene, and a skit in Russian “The New Year’s Adventures”, with beautiful costumes and memorable playing.
At this point, we would like to thank Bill Mitroschak for his generous donation for the field trips of the Sunday school children. With Bill’s financial help children had a chance to see “Stars on Ice”, also a play “The Sound of Music” and bowl in Richmond. God bless you Bill for many, well years!
Among other cultural and educational activities, two lecture-talks should be mentioned. On March 10, last year, Igor Baukin prepared a talk about the XIX century Russian Landscape artists. It was enjoyed by many.
In October, Dr. Galina Ovodova held a very informative and interesting lecture about Homeopathy and gave helpful advice, telling us how to cure colds and flu. Thank you very much and we hope to hear more in the future.
During the passed year, lectures on Orthodoxy were organized on every 2ed and 4th Saturday of every month, one in English and one in Russian.
Our plans for the year 2003 are the following:
– To organize a strong youth group;
– To continue Bible studies;
– To organize youth retreats.
In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you who help and encourage us in our work with children. We ask you to keep our Sunday school and their excellent teachers in your daily prayers!
May our God bless us all!
