Gilbert Parker Brown 1908-2001

September 9, 1908 in Dartmouth – April 16, 2001 at Burnaby General Hospital

Gilbert P. Brown was born on September 9, 1908 in Dartmouth, in the Province of Nova Scotia, to Robert S. and Louise Brown. He was one of eleven children and the last of the family to pass away on Easter Monday, April 16, 2001 at Burnaby General Hospital.

As a young man, he began working in a drugstore in Halifax as a clerk, and pretty soon, because of his natural intelligence, he rose to a managerial position. By year 1931 he was transferred to Charlottetown, at Prince Edward Island where he met his future wife, Dorothy May Sims. They married on January 1, 1932. Gilbert and Dorothy were blessed by God with a wonderful daughter Alexandra, the constant joy of their lives.

Over the years the family moved many times, starting at the East Coast and ending here in our beautiful British Columbia. They stayed some time in St. John, New Brunswick, then Gilbert took a position as a representative for the Anglo Canadian Drug Store in Toronto. Later he was transferred to Winnipeg, and from there to Vancouver. Eventually, Gilbert left Anglo Canadian and set up his own business in the drug wholesale. He retired in his early 70’s and lived quietly his remaining years in Burnaby.

Gilbert was a very dutiful husband and father, doing all within his possibility for his wife Dorothy and their daughter, Alexandra. He was a hard working, quiet man, who seldom complained in spite his deteriorating health. He was legally blind at the end, and due to .his advanced age, his entire body weakened to the point of a general breakdown.

Gilbert was a devoted Christian and a long time member of the Anglican church. He was introduced to the Orthodoxy, many years ago, in our Holy Resurrection Church in Vancouver but being shy by the nature didn’t make the final decisive step for conversion until much later. He became Orthodox on January 1, 2000, through the Rite of Chrismation.

Gilbert was a noble man and will be missed by his loving family and friends. May be his memory eternal! «Yesterday he died with Christ; today he returned to life with Him!» (St. Gregory of Nazianzus).
