Tamara Pistophides

IN MEMORY OF TAMARA PISTOPHIDES 1909-2002

Thank you dear friends and family for coming today to share in our sorrow. Death held no fear for Tamara, she had mentally prepared herself a long time ago. She had an abiding faith in God and this gave her great comfort and peace. Tamara was born in 1909 in Harbin, China. She was the fourth child born to August and Theodosia Ellers. In all there were two older brothers, Eugene and Alexis. One older sister Lydia and one younger sister Musa. She also had two half sisters Ira and Alla. She was the last to go.

She grew up and went to school in Vladivostok in Russia and as a young woman of twenty-one or two she managed to escape from Vladivostok with her younger sister Musa, first to Harbin and then to Tientsin and later to Shanghai. There she met and married Socrates Pistophides. They had one son Alexis. After many years in China surviving the war she lost her husband in 1952. Those were dark days for her but she had a ray of sunshine in her brother Alexis. Just when things seemed the darkest he would send her money from Hong Kong. I have no idea how often this happened, but in her own words he was her salvation.

In 1953, Tamara and Alexis were repatriated to Greece, where they lived for approximately one year before immigrating to Canada. She has lived the greatest part of her life here in Vancouver where she worked.

She is survived by her son Alexis and daughter-in-law Christa, grand-daughter Angelica, grand-son Peter, great grand children Ryan, Connor and Calista.

She is also survived by her brother Eugene Ellers family in Winnipeg; her brother Alexis Ellers family in the United States; her sisters Alla Dege-Boitsov families, in Russia; her sisters Ira Dege-Mandel family also in Russia; her cousin Olga Pucherts family in the United States.

Thank you sincerely for being here
